July 4, 2017 – The crisis in Marawi City started on May 23, 2017 when the Philippine military forces engaged the ISIS-inspired Maute fighters in a firefight in the city. The armed conflict is continuing to this day, affecting thousands of people, both Muslims and Christians, who have fled the city to neighboring towns and cities. Evacuation centers have been set up in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City for those who have no families to turn to.
Three days after the outbreak of the crisis, MASS SPEC coordinated with the Archdiocese’s Social Action Center (SAC), Interfaith Organizations, NGOs, DSWD and the Cagayan de Oro LGU in deciding the appropriate response of the cooperative sector to the crisis. The federation then mobilized financial support from its members in Mindanao.
Forty-three (43) cooperatives have responded to this call for support, and a total of FIVE HUNDRED THIRTY-TWO THOUSAND PESOS (P532,000) in donations have been collected so far, together with the federation’s own funds. MSU-IIT National Multipurpose Cooperative based in Iligan City mobilized assistance through “Tabang Marawi” and directly assisted internally displaced persons in the city. Part of the donations from the cooperatives were used to procure 5-kilo bags of rice and distributed through MSU-IIT NMPC.
A total of TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND PESOS (P250,000) have been disbursed so far for internally displaced persons. MASS SPECC is continuing to coordinate with other agencies in the disposition of the remaining funds.
