Fostering Solidarity and Empowerment: MASS-SPECC’s “COOPmmunity” Outreach

On December 21, 2024, MASS-SPECC brought the spirit of co-operation and solidarity to life through its annual outreach program, “COOPmmunity: A Solidarity Project with Grade 5 Students of Indulang Integrated School.” Held in Barangay Indulang, Talakag, Bukidnon, the initiative embodied the cooperative principle of Concern for Community, combining acts of generosity, education, and environmental stewardship.

The program delivered a blend of meaningful activities designed to make a lasting impact. Students received umbrellas, hygiene kits, Happy Meals, and thoughtful gifts that spread holiday cheer and addressed practical needs. Beyond these gestures, the event emphasized empowering young minds through an engaging Financial Literacy session. Designed to be interactive and child-friendly, the session introduced basic financial principles. It encouraged the habit of saving, with each child receiving a coin bank to kickstart their “Ipon” (savings) challenge.

The cooperative also highlighted the value of teamwork and solidarity by sharing an inspiring video titled “Coffee: Group Organization.” Using a newly deployed smart projector, the video showcased how collective efforts among coffee farmers in Uganda led to remarkable results. For the students, whose community has a long history of coffee farming, this message resonated deeply, reminding them of the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges and protecting their local resources.

Environmental responsibility was another cornerstone of the initiative. In partnership with DENR Region 10, the program included the distribution of seedlings to encourage the preservation of native coffee trees, which are increasingly being replaced by other crops. This act of stewardship aims to instill in the students a sense of responsibility for their environment, fostering a deeper connection to their community’s natural heritage.

The outreach program marked several firsts for MASS-SPECC, from its introduction of child-focused financial literacy sessions to its innovative use of translated educational materials through the smart projector. These milestones reflect the cooperative’s ongoing efforts to adapt and innovate in addressing communities’ needs.

Looking ahead, MASS-SPECC is committed to further strengthening its ties with the Indulang community. With 2025 recognized as the International Year of Co-operatives, plans are underway to expand initiatives like COOPmmunity, working alongside other cooperatives in Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon to create a broader impact. These efforts are part of a larger vision to build a united Mindanawon Co-op Movement dedicated to education, sustainability, and resilience.

Through its COOPmmunity outreach, MASS-SPECC has once again demonstrated the transformative power of cooperative action. By fostering solidarity, empowering young learners, and promoting environmental care, the initiative has sown the seeds of long-term growth and community resilience. As MASS-SPECC continues its mission, it remains steadfast in its goal of building a brighter, sustainable future for communities across Mindanao.
